A penetrating treatment like the one we use shouldn’t. NexaNano, its maker, says its product “does not create a shiny film, will not yellow, and does not make surfaces slippery.”
The catch is the word “sealer.” It covers two very different kinds of product, and only one of them leaves a layer on top.
Penetrating treatment vs film coating
A penetrating treatment soaks into the pores. NexaNano says its products are designed to “penetrate porous surfaces” rather than sit on them. With no film on top, the surface your shoes touch is still the concrete itself. NexaNano also says it dries clear and keeps the natural look.
A film coating is a different product. It dries into a layer over the concrete, often with a sheen. A smooth film can change how the surface grips a shoe, more so when it’s wet. Comparing quotes? Ask which kind is going down.
Where to watch your step anyway
No treatment changes what water and ice do. Treated or not:
- Wet concrete is still wet concrete. A pool deck after a swim needs the same care it always did.
- Ice is ice. Keep sand on hand, or a deicer the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association considers acceptable for concrete, like rock salt or calcium chloride.
- Green film on a shady walk is slick on its own. That’s growth, not sealer, and concrete cleaning takes it off.
- Fresh treatment needs time. NexaNano says most surfaces are dry to the touch in one to two hours. Stay off it until then.
